How to boost your immunity with antioxidants

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that neutralise free radicals, thereby reducing or preventing them from causing cellular damage.  We can increase antioxidants in our diets through eating a variety of whole foods, such as berries, kiwifruit, oranges, onions, garlic, capsicum, pumpkin, carrots, green leafy vegetables, green tea, soybeans, tofu and lentils.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage the cells in your body.

How to boost your immunity with antioxidants:

These days our bodies are continually subjected to oxidative stress through what we put into our bodies and also what we are exposed to in our environment.  Diets high in fat, sugar and processed foods, obesity, radiation, pollutants, pesticides, industrial chemicals, cigarettes, alcohol and medications lead to an imbalance in our bodies. This causes free radicals to outnumber antioxidants in our bodies, leading to cellular damage and inflammation.

When this happens, our immune system triggers an inflammatory response which signals immune cells to the site of inflammation to heal and repair damaged cells and remove cellular debris.  So actually, inflammation is a vital bodily response to protect us from infection and heal us from injury.  However, as is usually the case, moderation is key.

When our bodies are constantly bombarded with oxidative stress, our immune systems can become over-reactive and then inflammation can lead to diseases such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, diabetes, asthma, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s) and cancer.

What can I do to reduce oxidative stress?

There are many ways of reducing oxidative stress, including:

  • Eating a diet high in antioxidants, including plenty of fruit and vegetables (organic if possible).

  • Switching to natural personal care and household products.

  • Regular exercise.

  • Reducing stress.
